I have been doing this (recycling) since I’ve been 11 years old. I’m the best at what I do. I don’t know if I can do anything else, maybe find a job as a labourer, but it’s difficult to find this work. For this recycling we sometimes make R50 a bag for plastics, it’s not much but we think it’s a good thing. My son, Lincoln, he is a good boy, but this is no place for him. I have so many other children with lots of different woman, I’ve lost count. But me and my boy, we stay in a building with 8 men just down the road – it’s the burned down one opposite the police station (Pinelands, Cape Town). We sleep there cause its safe, but we really wish that we could clean it up a bit so that we can have our family over to visit. We need a bakkie to come take away all the rubbish but we don’t know anyone who can help us.”
Joseph recycles for a better future, for himself and South Africa – POLYCO is helping people and organisations nationwide strive towards a more sustainable future. Help create awareness around recycling by sharing the stories of those on the ground. If they can do it, so can we.
